Iowa legislature passes carbon monoxide bill!

Last fall, Lauren Project President Don Johnson took the C.O. law from Colorado and met with a number of Iowa legislators to ask them to consider similar legislation in Iowa.  Senator Jeff Danielson, a professional firefighter, and later, Representative Guy Vander Linden, both said they would sponsor the bill.  After several months of conversations with legislators and lobbyists, the bill was passed by both the Senate (37-10) and the House (87-9 on 3/30/16) with the last step to be a signature from the Governor.  It’s wonderful news for the people of Iowa who now have another reason to make their homes safer from the silent killer of carbon monoxide.  The Lauren Project expresses our deep gratitude to Senator Danielson and Representative Vander Linder for shepherding this bill along.  Lives will be saved and injuries prevented.  One more state has seen the light!

LAUREN PROJECT BRINGS MESSAGE TO BRITISH COLUMBIA

Don Johnson at the 2013 BC FPO Annual Conference

FPO President Doug Bell and Vice President Mark Sminton with
Don Johnson following his speech at the annual conference of the Fire Prevention Officers of British
Columbia.

Recently, LAUREN Project President Don Johnson was invited to speak to the annual conference of the Fire Prevention Officers of British Columbia. The gathering of these professionals (called fire marshals in the U.S.) from throughout B.C. takes place annually to enhance education and awareness of fire and community safety opportunities. Johnson was invited to bring The LAUREN Project message of carbon monoxide safety to the group as their Keynote Speaker. Canada has no legislation requiring carbon monoxide alarms and only an estimated 40% of households have any form of CO protection. The story of Lauren’s inspiring life and her tragic death has helped professionals in the United States and now in Canada commit to improving CO safety in their communities. Victoria Fire Chief Jeff Lambert told Johnson following his talk that he gave his personal commitment that he would not let this issue drop. Victoria is the capital city of British Columbia. As a Board, we look forward to continuing to have an impact internationally both through carbon monoxide efforts and through ongoing financial support of volunteers sponsored by our Lauren Moilien Johnson International Human Rights Awards.
